Rude Awakening of the Day: An 80-year-old man who was though to have died of an asthma attack awoke 21 hours later to find himself locked inside a morgue fridge.
The 80-year-old man’s family had called for an undertaker to remove his body from their home following his apparent death. “When he got there, the driver examined the body, checked his pulse, looked for a heartbeat, but there was nothing,” said morgue owner Ayanda Maqolo.
When morgue workers heard shouts coming from one of the refrigerated compartments a day later, they thought it was a ghost. “I was also scared,” said Maqolo, “But they are my employees and I had to show them I wasn’t scared, so I called the police.” Maqolo waited for the police before reentering the morgue’s locker room. “I was glad they had their firearms,” he said, “in case something wanted to fight with us.”
The extremely confused man was taken to the hospital, where his was deemed stable enough for release. Health department spokesman Sizwe Kupelo took the opportunity to remind South Africans that it’s best to have a health official confirm a relative’s death before having them carted off to the funeral home.

Gregory Biggs, a homeless American man in Fort Worth, Texas, was struck by a car being driven by Chante Jawan Mallard and became lodged in her windshield with severe but not immediately fatal injuries. Mallard drove home and left the car in her garage with Biggs still lodged in her car’s windshield. Biggs died two days later. After the accident Mallard did not notify the police nor did she get Biggs any medical attention, even though she was a former nurse’s aide.  When Biggs died, she called a male friend, Clete Jackson, for assistance. Mallard, Jackson, and Jackson’s cousin Herbert Tyrone Cleveland, took the body to a park and left it there, even going so far as to set fire to part of the car in an attempt to disguise the evidence. The three were each convicted on charges of tampering with evidence for this action. Mallard became a suspect after she was reported talking and laughing about the incident at a party some four months after the events. “I hit this white man,” Mallard allegedly told acquaintance Maranda Daniel, laughing. Mallard was convicted of murder in June 2003, with a 50-year murder sentence and 10-year tampering sentence to run concurrently. She will be eligible for parole in 2027.
